Excerpts from The Box Breakers: Student Anthology

Hear from students just like you!
“My daughter was in the 11th grade and struggling at the time with the public school system. She had given up and was going to drop out with her only option to get a diploma being the GED at the adult literacy program. In the past I had tried local programs. For instance, there was one which cost us $75 a week. The only thing that my child got from there was unhealthy relationships with other unmotivated students who were as lost as she was. The other program seemed to be in place for the money more than the education and that ultimately failed my child too. The biggest difference was that we had a lot of flexibility with the curriculum and it wasn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach. I watched my daughter’s self-confidence soar as she finished her class each month. Even though all of the classes were online and she never physically sat in the classroom, Dr. Mabry was there with her every step of the way.
Her graduation day was the best part. I watched with my family as she received her high school diploma. It was presented to her in full cap and gown which was ground-breaking for her self-esteem!! This was the best news and immediately her life-altering journey began!!” - Crystal, Parent of a Class of 2016 Graduate
“I had a hard time in high school and I was bullied because of my sexual orientation. I lost focus a lot of the time because I was always fighting. I was always having to fight just to be respected for being myself. My behavior earned me a label as a trouble maker and that label caused me to be placed in a special education learning class for students with behavior disorders.
I didn’t have a behavior disorder problem. I was treated as a problem student but I was really the victim of bullying that was never addressed. When I learned that I was going to receive a Special Education Diploma instead of a high school diploma, I dropped out of school.” - Jerry, Thrive with Pride Graduate Class of 2018
“I struggled in the traditional education system not because I couldn’t do the work but because I wasn’t focused and didn’t want to do the work. I had teachers who cared about me but they didn’t know how to connect with me or how to motivate me. Then my grandmother got sick so I was having to take a few days off to help my mom take care of her. A few days became a week and a week became a month. When I had missed too many days, I just dropped out of school. .” - Kateisha, Macon County Chiefs' Diploma Program, Class of 2020
“4Sarah helped me to get enrolled in the Tiers Free Academy Program.  At first it was a bit difficult, so I asked Dr. Mabry for help. When I talked to Dr. Mabry for the first time, I was so amazed that she believed in me more than I believed in myself. She believed that I was going to finish the program and I would graduate with my high school diploma..” - Jessica, Box Breakers Program, Class of 2020 Graduate
